Cooking Squirrel

When the hunt is over and you are wondering what to do with the squirrels you have in the refrigerator, take a word of advice from a squirrel eater. You worked long and hard to get those squirrels this far, and you want to make the best of them so you enjoy each and every bite! I resect animals as a living thing, and to waste the squirrels would be a sin in my book! They died so you can eat, and I hope you gain the same respect for all animals you hunt.

Squirrel Meat : As squirrels go, the meat has a flavor of its own. Nothing tastes the same as squirrel, and when the winds of october blow cold here in Wisconsin, I get a taste for squirrel that calls me into the fields and wind rows of farms searching the tree tops for dinner.

Squirrels are a rough bunch of animals who run quickly from place to place, and spend alot of energy climbing trees. All this activity makes squirrel meat a little tough if you cook it wrong, so read on to pick up some tips on how to cook squirrel so it falls off the bone!

My Mother used to cook squirrel the same way every time, and why not, It was delicious! It was a simple recipe she know, and it went real well with potatoes, and veggies. She  would put 5-6 squirrels into a roasting pan with a couple of inches of water in it. Then she would pour a couple packages of dry LIPTON ONION soup mix over the squirrels, and cover with the lid. Into the oven for a couple of hours at 300 degrees and We were eating squirrel for supper! It would no longer be tough, and the meat would slide off the bone.

Later on I started cooking alot, being a single dad with two sons will do that to you. I got a little sick of the same old recipe every time, so I started picking the elements of my moms squirrel recipe apart. It turned out that all you need to do with any tough meat like squirrel, is to use what chef call moist heat. Its like a steam bath that breaks down the musches and fibers in the tissues. Deep frying is considdered moist heat, and I do enjoy fryed squirrel. Squirrel can be used in soups and chowders too.

Seeing as squirrel meat is sorta tough, I wouldnt recomend using a charcoal barbecue to cook squirrel. Dry heat will make it even tougher and you wont get the most out of the bountiful harvest you worked so hard for.

I hope I helped you with your squirrel recipe selection, If you did,

If this is your first time hunting squirrels, you will want to know a few things about squirrels. My area of expertise is removing squirrels from homes where they nest in attic spaces, and walls. I am a squirrel trapper, and a squirrel hunter. I make my paycheck with results, and if I dont produce, I dont get paid. So I have the squirrel pretty figured out, its just in my own best intrest, and im willing to share that with you here in this artical. Ill start off slow, and try to keep the technical talk to a minimum so I dont loose you in the mix.

Eastern Grey Squirrel

I remember when I was a boy squirrel hunting with my Dad. I carried a b.b. gun and he would carry a .22 remington bolt action rifle. He could drill a squirrel through the head no matter where it was, and the squirrel would come tumbeling down to the forest floor with a loud thump! It was some of the best times in my life that i remember. On a frosty October morning all it took to get me out of bed were the words squirrel hunting, and I was dressed and waiting at the door.

Later as I grew up, I would go squirrel hunting with my friends, but it was never quite the same. We never saw so many squirrels, and when we did, we usually missed them, or shot the meat up pretty badly. It seems that I wasnt quite paying attention to my Dad in all the excitement while squirrel hunting. I was more focussed on the squirrel. It all comes down to knowing squirrels, and knowing when to pull the trigger.

Here in Wisconsin the big old oak trees grow 40 feet out of the ground. And when squirrels know you are in the woods, they get to someplace safer. Tops of the trees are full of leaves until the frosty fall air of october, November make them fall to the ground. This takes away the squirrels cover and alows you to spend more time shooting them, and less time looking for them.

Dawn and Dusk: The best time to hunt squirrels is either just at sunup, and just before sundown. Anyone who hunts squirrels all day long will find the middle of the day better spent playing cards. Squirrels go out at first light because they want breakfast, and water. Same at dusk, they want to get watered up before they go to bed. Makes sence dont it?

Move Slowly: Squirrels arent exactly high on the food chain, and they know it. Everything wants to get at MR. Squirrel. So any movements you make should be thought out, and smooth. Slow movements are what will still catch his attention, but wont send him running for a hollow tree where you cant get him.

Watch for movement: Squirrels are a nervous bunch of rodents. They make sharp jittery movements when they do anything. Learn to watch all around you at the same time for quick movements.

Look for Squirrel Sign: Disturbed leaves on the forest floor, chewed acorns under an old tree, will show you where squirrels are eating and foraging. Dont go shopping for a BIG MAC at a pizza joint is all i have to say about that. Look for where the squirrels are, then start looking for squirrels.

When you see a Squirrel: Dont go running after him like a maniac! Calmly watch the squirrel. And dont get him all excited. A rifle is best used on a stationary target, so we gotta get him to stand still. Most times if you dont chase him, hes gonna go right back to feeding. When he does, you will get the head shot you were looking for.

Squirrel Calls : A squirrel call will bring squirrels out and right to you in most cases. Dont over do it! Sometimes less is better. If you listen to a conversation with tow squirrels, you will notice that they bark for a little, then they wait for a response. You should do the same. Squirrels have several vocals, and alarm vocals should be avoided. These will cause a squirrel to bolt for a hollow tree.

Areas to Look for Squirrels: I learned a long time ago to hunt small patches of woods when hunting squirrels. Wind Rows between corn fields are great producers of limits of grey squirrels. And they are always big and fat like a butterball turkey! Why hunt large forests when what you seek is just a few hundred yards away.

Marksmanship : You need to practice more than once a month to be a good shot. I shoot every chance I get, but then again I get paid all day for shooting squirrels. So, do the best ya can at practicing with whatever you shoot squirrels with. If you are going to hunt squirrels with a shot gun, I have a neet trick for ya! Let the squirrel get up a tree, and you on the other side. Then you find that first crotch in the tree, and back up about 20 feet and aim at that crotch. Start with your squirrel call and watch for the curious head to apear. Walah! Dead squirrel, and no holes in the good stuff!

I hope you had as much fun reading this as I did wrighting it. And I wish you luck hunting squirrels. Give a kid a squirrel, and he eats for a day.Teach a kid to hunt and he will eat for a lifetime!

Here we look at our options in squirrel traps. Read on to learn more about squirrel trapping and choices in squirrel bait. Some states consider a squirrel a game animal, so before you go squirrel trapping, be sure you have the proper licensing.

Squirrel Trap Colony Squirrel Trap

Here is a colony squirrel trap. It is a humane trap which will keep squirrels alive. After you catchone female squirrel, you will have every male squirrel in the neighborhood trying to get inside with her. It should be set where squirrels are feeding. Watching squirrels will teach you alot about trapping squirrels. Make sure the bait you put out for trapping squirrels in this humane trap is visable, and you leave a trail of  food going into the door of the trap. That way the squirrels don’t need to work so hard to get inside!

Home made squirrel trap Home Made Squirrel Trap

Here we have a homemade squirrel trap. Basic as it may be, it is humane, and consists of the basic trap parts. A body, a door, and a trigger mechanism. The squirrel is lured inside with an offering of food, which leads him to the main coarse. He will be greedy and anxious to get to the main pile of food, but he can’t get to it without triggering the door. The trap needs some sort of locking device, or spring to keep the squirrel from opening the door and escaping the squirrel trap.

Colony Squirrel Trap/ One Way Door Here is a fine example of a colony squirrel trap convertable into a one way door.

This is a one way door with the option to make it into a colony trap for squirrels. It is designed to get squirrels out of a building. First we must locate where the squirrels are entering the house. Then we attach the flanges to the house, over the squirrel hole. This will force the squirrel to go through the trap, and push the door open to get out. The other areas of the house should be thouroughly checked to be sure that the squirrel will not chew back in at a differant spot. If the chances are good that she will chew back in, causing more damage, I recommend putting the back on the cage, and relocating her about three miles from the home.

Squirrel Trap Colony Squirrel Trap is designed to trap several squirrels, humanely, living inside a building.

A colony trap can be made by hand, with some clips, and welded wire. The door needs no trigger, and there is no need to bait a one way door system. Just look at the entry point, and cut an opening to let the squirrel use the door you provided. The picture above has the opening cut out of the top so a squirrel will drop into the system.

squirrel snare trap Squirrel snare traps are designed to kill squirrels by strangulation.

Squirrel snare trapping isn’t easy, but once you learn how, it can be an economical way to trap squirrels. Squirrel snare traps cost about fifty cents each to build. Basicaly, you put the loop of snare wire where the squirrel has to put her head through the loop in order to move forward. When the squirrel moves forward, she pulls the noose tight around her neck, the more she fights the snare, the tighter the trap gets. Pretty soon the trap kills the squirrel.

The above squirrel snare trap shows the basic idea of how to set a squirrel snare trap. Make sure the snare loop is just a little larger than a squirrels head, this will ensure a quick kill, and a neck catch.

squirrel jaw trap squirrel trap / foot hold

I don’t recommend this trap for any animal, unless the trap options are extremely limited. Squirrels are not, so i womt even get into how to set these traps for squirrels.

The purpose of this artical is to give you some ideas on building a squirrel feeder of your own, or an idea of how to shop for a good squirrel feeder. Most people enjoy watching squirrels out there window. The fact that squirrels will hang around longer if you feed them is a no brainer. And if they like your squirrel feeder better that the neighbors, the neighbor will have to watch the squirrels from your house.

A simple but effective squirrel feeder What squirrel could turn down this corn on a stick?

Simple is sometimes best when dealing with squirrel feeders. The little guys are rough on just about everything, especially a squirrel feeder with moving parts!

Spinning Squirrel Feeder Spinning Corn Cob Squirrel Feeder

This squirrel feeder actually has moving parts, but is still simple, and easy to fix if the squirrels are rough housing too much, and break it. The corn cobbs are replaced as the squirrels eat them clean by sticking them on a long nail, or screw.

squirrel feeder Keeping squirrel food dry

The flip top lid on this squirrel feeder keeps the peanuts dry. A squirrel can see the peanuts through the glass, and he will figure out how to open the lid if she wants them badly enough. Sometimes it helps to leave a few peanuts out on the perch so she eats the appetizer, then works extra hard to get at the others!

Squirrel feeder with a window A squirrel feeder with a window will let you watch the squirrels as they eat!

I hope this artical gave you some insight as to what kind of squirrel feeder you would like outside your window. You can make your own squirrel feeder, or go to any department store or hardware store to find a ready made squirrel feeder. Bird feeders work fine!

Baby Squirrels

Click Here To contact a Squirrel Removal Expert,   Baby squirrels are born during the warmer months in the Northern Regions of North America, and all year long in the southern regions of North America. A female squirrel can have up to 4 litters per year in the south, and only 2 litters of baby squirrels in the north. Mother squirrels know not to breed when it is too cold for her babies to survive.

Baby Squirrels New Born Squirrels are called “pinkies” Im sure this picture tells why

Baby squirrels are something that looks like they are from outer space as soon as they are born! Buldgey eyes, no hair, and as clumbsey as they can be. They don’t make any sound at all. They just lay in the nest, and wait for the mother squirrel to come feed them. They will live on milk produced by the female squirrel for up to 6 weeks before they emerge from a hollow tree, or an attic of a home to see the big world outside. They will be afraid of everything, as it is all foraign to them, but the look and smell of the outside world will have there attention and curiosity for the rest of there lives!

Juvinile Grey Squirrel

Here is a picture of a juvinile squirrel about 3 weeks old. Shes looking a little more like a squirrel than when she was born doesn’t she?

And now they start exploring the world outside there nest! There are dangers outside for the baby squirrels, but the mother is always nearby, and will become extremly agressive if something tries to harm one of her babys! She will bark, chatter, and run at a threat, no matter how large it is!

Baby squirrels do have enemies: Coyotes, Fox, Owls, Hawks, Snakes, and even Dogs and Cats would love to make that baby squirrel into a tastey meal. Its survival of the fittest out there in the animal world, and at this point, they arent quite there yet, but the ones who survive the first 6 months of life will be as agile as there mother, climbing trees, running across roof tops, and showing off all the acrobatic skills while showing no fear of falling even from the smallest branches of the highest tree!

I hope you enjoyed learning about baby squirrels as much as I enjoyed writing about them, thanks for visiting!

Squirrels in San Francisco will run branches like a ladder to get on your roof. Once they get there, its only a matter of time before they start chewing on wood and get in.

Damage Squirrels Do

Squirrels in San Francisco attics chew wires and wood all day long while inside, and start breeding in mid Feb. Then arround the middle of March the baby Squirrels are born… in your attic. Now you have 6-8 more Squirrels to deal with, and every one of them wants to chew wires and wood. Not to mention all the poop and pee in your insulation! While chewing wires in your attic, somethimes the electric shock kills squirrels. Other times, the squirrel escapes and the house burns down.

Squirrel PoisionSquirrel poision isnt the way to go in San Francisco California because the Squirrels die inside the attic or walls and cause a dead animal smell which is unbearable. Dead animal smell in the walls of a house in San Francisco is only going to get worse until the dead animal is fully decayed, which may take 2 weeks!

Squirrel TrapWe use humane traps in San Francisco California. A squirrel trap should be made out of metal or PVC. because squirrels can chew out of a cheep squirrel trap. Some other companies in San Francisco use a lethal squirrel trap designed to snap the squirrels neck when he activates it. Still other squirrel traps are designed to electrocute the squirrel when it goes inside.

Squirrel Noises I have been in alot of houses with squirrels in attic, and Ive heard lots of noises they make.Running noises, scampering noises, barking noises, scratching noises, and the sounds of little claws running from one side to the other.

Scratching Noise in Attic San Francisco If you are hearing scratching noises in your attic in San Francisco, chances are good that you have some type of animal living there!
